Archeological Research

Since 1992 the celtic settlement in Schwarzenbach has been one of the main areas of archaeological research in eastern Austria. With the help of many scientists and the backing of the municipality of Schwarzenbach and others, the VIAS is systematically and interdisciplinaryly researching the settlement. The main focus of the project is on researching the settlement and its economy.

With the help of archeological prospecting and the results of ongoing excavations (supervised by Dr. Wolfgang Neubauer, VIAS-Vienna Institute for Archaeological Science) it was possible to get a very detailed picture of the archeological structures.
The archeological features and findings show a diverse history of the settlement starting in neolithic times (approx. 3000 b.c.) then Bronze Age (1800-1000 b.c.) and ending in the pre-Roman Iron Age (200 b.c. - 0). During the Iron Age the settlement evolved into a city like urban center encircled by a solid defensive wall. The picture below shows a reconstructed part of the rampart of the pfostenschlitzmauer type on the site.

1.6% of the approx. 15 ha large settlement area has been archeologically researched with modern excavation methods. It was important to work together with different institutions on this project to be able to get as much information as possible concerning the settlement and its history to reconstruct a realistic picture.
